Highlights: Hackman, as Lex Luthor [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is simultaneously smug, pathetic, and malevolent; and Ned Beatty is perfect as his idiotic sidekick.
Highlights: Terrence Stamp as the evil General Zod. Kneel!
Much of the credit for the movie's success lies in the script, written by none other than The Godfather author Mario Puzo. However, Donner's direction is astute, and he made some inspired choices. For example, he rightly avoided many interested big-name stars, instead choosing newcomer Christopher Reeve, who became iconic in the Man of Steel's blue-and-reds.
Superman II has more action than the first, and the plot sees our hero in real danger from three foes who share his powers. Not only that, but Superman is also, during the course of the film, forced to choose between duty and desire. Despite these strengths, the film lacks a lot of the heart of the previous film. Donner's cut, released on DVD in 2006, is superior to the theatrical release.
Superman II (1981) is an excellent superhero film, even if it is far from perfect. Though it benefits from a script once more penned by Puzo, the studio unfortunately nudged Donner out of the production and enlisted Richard Lester, who (although a good director in his own right) is a bit too silly for the subject matter [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which, if handled as anything less than serious material, rapidly becomes camp.

Highlights: A drunken Superman, with a five o'clock shadow and a bad attitude, flicks peanuts off a bar. They travel at the speed of bullets, shattering bottles.
Director Richard Donner brings Superman to the big screen in one of the best superhero movies of all time. Even though the movie spotlights the hero's lengthy origin story (beginning with the destruction of Krypton and the infant Superman's journey by spaceship to Earth, continuing on to his childhood and teenage years, and finally detailing his arrival, as an adult Clark Kent, at The Daily Planet), the script and direction are so economical that the exposition doesn't bog down the pacing or detract from the excitement of the film. On the contrary, all the back story lends weight to the choice Superman faces in the final act of the film.
Featuring an excellent cast that includes Gene Hackman and, incredibly, the legendary Marlon Brando as Jor-El, the movie's only flaw is a painfully bad poem recited in a voice-over, describing Lois Lane's feelings for Superman as he takes her on a midnight flight.

The screwy supercomputer plotline, the episodic feel of the events, the lack of Lex Luthor in lieu of a far less interesting criminal billionaire, the practically non-existent Lois and the slow pacing can all be forgiven because of some interesting scenes in which Superman turns evil, and ultimately is confronted by his "inner Clark." However, can anyone forgive the colossal misuse of comic genius Richard Pryor?
Superman has appeared in numerous films and TV programs, starting with the Fleisher cartoons and the live-action serials, starring Kirk Alyn [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the 1940s and early 1950s. The 50s saw George Reeves star in the television series The Adventures of Superman. More modern programs like Lois and Clark and Smallville, and countless cartoons, continue to bring Superman into American living rooms. But when people think of Superman films, they commonly turn to the series of movies begun in 1978, starring the late Christopher Reeve. Here's a look at that series of movies.
