Carolina is allowing 130.5 yards per game on the ground, 25th in the league. If Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett can't get going against the Panthers, they certainly won't against a potential playoff opponent.
Carroll expects Clausen to succeed – eventually. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Head coach Pete Carroll couldn't say for sure that leading receiver Mike Williams would return Sunday, but he was optimistic Friday.
5. For the record
The Seahawks offensive has been a game of musical chairs all year, especially on the left side. It's finally firming up.
If the Seahawks truly are a playoff team, they will need a run game. Sunday might be their best chance to establish one.
"He's an NFL quarterback that's going to have a terrific career, I think," Carroll said. "He hasn't played in every game this year, he's played in a good number of them. He's a natural to make it."
But if there's a silver lining to Williams' absence, it's the continued emergence of Ben Obomanu as a go-to receiver.
1. What's my line?
3. Did you catch that?
Last week, Clausen was 16-of-28 for 195 yards and an interception. The Panthers likely will lean on running backs Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson to control the pace of the game, but if Clausen gets rattled it could be the key to the Seahawks' defensive success.
2. Run with that [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The Panthers are young, and nowhere is their lack of experience more obvious that at quarterback.
But the Seahawks really could use Williams and Obomanu on Sunday. If there's one thing the Panthers do well, it's defend the pass. They allow 205.6 yards per game thought the air. If the Seahawks again fail to run the ball well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hasselbeck could be throwing into tight coverage all day. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
It pretty implausible, but the Seahawks know as well as any team that no opponent can be taken lightly.
Despite the good protection, the line has continued to struggle at run blocking.
But that could be the danger.
Rookie Jimmy Clausen will start Sunday, and has looked better in his latest go-around as the primary signal-caller. But Qwest Field could be tough on the young quarterback.
"You know, everyone has an opportunity in life and I think it's kind of neat to watch Ben," Bates said. "Sometimes it takes a year, two years, some people it takes 10 years. When a person has that opportunity, they can go one or two ways and Ben took it and just ran with it."
At first glance, Sunday's game is a walk-over. The Panthers are an NFL-worst 1-10. The Seahawks enjoy one of the best home-field advantages in all of sports.
Carolina's Stewart, a former star at Timberline High in Olympia, is playing his first professional game in front of his friends and family, and he'll certainly have big eyes considering the Seahawks' porous run defense.
"So we're going to be more interested in him just making good decisions, being smart with the ball and obviously, any time we go on the road, we practice (dealing with crowd noise) – you can't get any louder at practice than what we practice at – and just being able to handle the pressure of the game."
Hasselbeck has been very well protected lately, and it has shown in his passing numbers. He has averaged 327 yards per game though the air since missing the Week 9 loss to the New York Giants in Week 9.
The Seahawks are 5-6. They have a somewhat favorable path to the postseason, but their deficiencies are glaring.
Bates said the offense found itself playing from behind last week in a 42-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and had to take to the air. Hasselbeck doesn't necessarily think the Seahawks have to establish the run early, but they do need to be able to rely on it in certain situations.
"People are getting confidence," Stewart said of the Panthers' running attack.
Left guard Chester Pitts is doubtful, but Mike Gibson will fill in for him for the second straight game.
"Well, last week he was in Cleveland, a pretty loud outdoor stadium," Carolina head coach John Fox said. "Not that the crowd noise isn't one of my concerns but with a rookie quarterback, you have other concerns.
4. Carolina kittens
"They're coming together," offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates said. "It's tough. It's tough when you're (moving) new guys in and out every week. But they're fighting. They're competing their tails off. Pass protection has been really good and we just got to keep improving in the run blocking. But the guys are working hard." [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
If Carolina can move the ball on the ground and the Seahawks are forced to throw into the Panthers' strong secondary, the records might not matter. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
"More than anything I think, if there's an emphasis in my mind, it's that when we're in those running situations – say it's a third-and-short or a fourth-and-short – that's where we've got to finish, or that's where we've got to make our play," Hasselbeck said. "I think that's probably the key in my mind that we need to do." [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
"In the perfect state, I think 50-50 is the way to go," Bates said of the balance between running and passing plays. "It puts a lot of pressure on the defense to defend both the run and the pass. When you become one-dimensional, it's tough."
