Multi-talented actor William Petersen was the 2009 winner at the organization’s gala in June. Well known for his leading role in Crime Scene Investigation Petersen has been involved in Chicago theatre productions for many years.
In 1973, Bette Davis who starred in All About Eve, presented the Society with an award statuette used in the film. She [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in turn, received the Society’s 20th Anniversary Sarah Siddons Award as “An Actress for All Seasons”. Present to pay tribute to the great actress was Anne Baxter, her co-star in the classic film.
In June 2009, actress Hollis Resnik received her second Sarah Siddons Award for leading lady in a Chicago production. This year’s honor was in recognition of her performances in Grey Gardens.
The Society’s first award was presented in 1953 to Helen Hayes for Mrs. McThing. She received another for her work in The Show Off in 1969.

The Sarah Siddons portrait displayed in the movie was a replica of Sir Joshua Reynolds’ 1784 “Mrs. Siddons as the Tragic Muse”.
The film’s narrator, Addison DeWitt (George Saunders), describes the Sarah Siddons Award for Distinguished Achievement as the “highest honor our theatre knows”. Prominently displayed in the opening and closing scenes of All About Eve is a large painting of the actress Sarah Siddons.
Brian Dennehy was recipient in 1999 for his stage performance as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman. He was the first male actor to receive the annual award. Some performers were honored by the Sarah Siddons Society for their accumulative work in Chicago theatres.

Sarah Siddons (1755-1831) was an acclaimed British actress whose career spanned more than forty years. Through her successful career, she proved the legitimacy of the acting profession for women. Often referred to as the Diva of Drury Lane, one of her more outstanding portrayals was as Lady Macbeth. There is a statue of the great tragedienne in Westminster Abbey.

In 1952, a group of Chicago theatre patrons, inspired by the great actress’ presence in All About Eve, founded the Sarah Siddons Society. The non-profit organization presents an annual award for excellence in a Chicago theatre performance. As in the movie, the award is fashioned after the Reynolds portrait.
