Crosby, Stills and Nash's Set
Runnin' Down A DreamYou Wreck me
Coming out just after 9:30pm and immediately bursting into the anthemic and grooving rocker "Listen To Her Heart" Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers, flanked by a backdrop of large video screens and a well synced light-show, struck a powerful pose for the eager masses (who would later on break out into massive sing-alongs and clap-alongs), and kicked off their own, roughly 100-minute setlist, found below.
(Encore)
As well, speaking of classics, one couldn't help but overhear the all the many calls for the band to play "American Girl" throughout the night, particularly during the encore. Requests which unfortunately weren't taken into consideration. But as the old saying goes, it is always best to leave the audience wanting more.
Too Much "Mojo", No "American Girl"
The times and the music scene may have changed since their respective heydays but there's no denying the sheer rollicking force that veteran rockers Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and the near-mythic Crosby, Stills and Nash displayed Wednesday evening before a sold out and extremely enthusiastic crowd at the Air Canada Centre.
As well, the talented threesome, and their backing band, made sure to make a point of serving up exceptionally-well rework

And what a finely-tuned setlist it was, as the first four songs, particularly the Springsteen-esque call-to-arms "Won't Back Down" and the classic "Free Fallin'" had the Toronto audience on it's feet, fist-pumping, and chanting along with a roaring intensity.
Something which was especially true for "Free Fallin'", which Petty made a point of introducing as the song that all the girls backstage had put in requests for. And for good reason, as Petty and his band performed it with all the elegant and romantic grace that made it such a great tune to begin with.
An old proverb that Crosby, Stills and Nash were well aware of themselves, as they noted during their set that they had something like "over two thousands songs to choose from", before settling on a typically poignant and moving "Bluebird" from the days when Neil Young was also on board.

Musical Theatre in Toronto Fall Winter 2009 2010
It was easily an early peak in a set crammed with classic-rocking Petty. One which also made a point of throwing in a few curve balls, like a grooving, multi-segmented and mesmerizing cover of the early Fleetwood Mac track "Oh Well".
The only time the energy sagged somewhat was just after the main set's mid-point [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when Petty and co. dished out material from their latest album, this year's Mojo [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which, while succeeding with it's blues-rock angle, simply doesn't reach the heights of classic Petty like the powerful "Refugees".
Just as a fine wine improves with age, both acts found themselves in top form [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], something which was particularly true in the case of Crosby, Stills and Nash's tightly-focused performance, and their extended 85-minute opening set, complete with a three song encore. But more on that later.
