Haley says Chiefs must find way to ease load off certain players
Coach Todd Haley has repeatedly said the Chiefs need to use all of the 45 players available to them on game day if they’re going to be successful. To that end, he said he spent time recently researching the number of snaps the players have been in the lineup on offense, defense and special teams.
What the exercise told him: Some players are used too [link widoczny dla zalogowanych][/u] heavily and others not enough.
“We’re really just working hard at trying to find more jobs for more people,” Haley said. “To continue to try to become a good team … we’re going to have to get our guys (snaps). Right now … there are too many Jackie Battles, who has 67 plays but 63 of them are on special teams and too many … Brandon Flowers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has 180 snaps but 170 of those are on defense. “We’ve got to alleviate some guys and train others and just try to balance it out a little bit.”
That doesn’t mean Battle will soon be taking playing time away from Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles or that the Chiefs will soon be resting Flowers, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych][/u] who might be their most valuable player through the first three games.
But Haley seems intent on finding ways to take some pressure off players like Flowers and safety Eric Berry, who between defense and special teams has played a substantial amount of snaps. He would also like to get more work from players the Chiefs might think are underutilized, like Battle and linebacker Andy Studebaker.
The Chiefs have four players who have yet to dress for any of their games: fullback Mike Cox, linebackers Charlie Anderson and Justin Cole and defensive back Jackie Bates.
