Temat postu: Air Jordans 2011 A Paris Monument, Mau air jordans
In the late 1930s the French actor returned to his homeland. Here he had to endure yet another war. During the Second World War Chevalier sang on the Paris stage and performed at the former POW camp in which he had been held during the First World War. He was accused of being a collaborator with the Nazis because he admired Petain and performed during the Occupation but he was later vindicated. His partner during the war was actually a Jewish dancer, Nita Raya.
Maurice Chevalier’s Early Career
Chevalier began performing at the Casino des Touelles

, a working class music-hall. He was only 12. When he made his debut he stood stiffly and sang off-key. The unimpressed audience laughed ‘Little Chevalier’ off the stage. However, they eventually grew to like his clown-like, humorous act. His career only took off, however, when he met the famous French musical star Mistinguett.
Jean Cocteau once said that: “Paris has two monuments: the Eiffel Tower and Maurice Chevalier.” This is probably true. The star of Gigi was one of the best-loved actors of all time. His charming smile, convivial attitude, and good looks helped him to become very popular, especially in America. His French accent and sophistication appealed to almost everyone.
Maurice Chevalier’s Film Career
Born in 1888, Chevalier was a ‘street urchin’ who came from the working-class Paris suburb of Ménilmontant. His father, a house-painter

, was an alcoholic who was also violent. He eventually left Chevalier and his two brothers. Chevalier, brought up by a single mother living in great poverty, left school at a very young age.
Chevalier returned to Hollywood again. His biggest film success was probably the musical,

made in 1958. In the movie, based on Colette’s famous novel, Chevalier played the urbane former lover of Gigi’s grandmother. They have a poignant meeting in which Chevalier sings: “I Remember It Well.”
Mistinguett was thirteen years older and reaching the end of her career. She taught Chevalier many performance techniques and helped his career. He became her dancing partner at the Folies Bergère.. They also became lovers.
Chevalier began appearing in silent French films from 1909. The ambitious man wanted to further his career, however, and decided to go to Hollywood. Here he played light roles that suited his Gallic charm. His films included
The Love Parade
with Jeanette MacDonald and
The Big Pond
. He was nominated for Academy Awards for his roles in these films.
The little boy became a circus acrobat when he was only about ten but an accident prevented him pursuing this career. He worked at various jobs, including apprentice engraver. He also worked in a tack factory. Eventually he decided to start singing and dancing. He was still a young teenager when he decided to start his career in the French music-halls.
After the war the star resumed his relationship with Mistinguett and his music-hall career. They performed in London and went to the United States where Chevalier watched other performers and noted their sophistication. He decided to change his clownish act and became a bit of a ‘dandy’. The star donned evening dress and a boater hat. This outfit suited him and he became the epitome of the charming French man.

The war interrupted Chevalier’s budding career. During the First World War, Chevalier joined the army. He was wounded and became a POW. He decided to learn English. This would improve his career dramatically.
