He explored the newly discovered American continents by ship, providing vital information and maps of their shorelines. He was also the first European explorer to correctly argue that the land was not the easternmost edge of Asia, but rather a truly New World. <br />According to Roberto Almagia in the Encyclopedia Britannica Online (2009), Vespucci was born around 1454 in Florence, Italy, the son of a notary. He was educated by his uncle. As a young man, he was employed by the powerful Medici family. In 1479, he was charged with the task of meeting with the French king on behalf of the family. In late 1495 or early 1496, the Medicis promoted Vespucci to a management position in their Sevilla <a href="http://www.cheapcoachere.com/coach-baby-handbags" target="_blank" class="postlink">baby bags clearance</a>, Spain agency. Later, the name was extended to North America. <br />Some sources indicate that Vespucci was actively involved in maritime exploration as early as 1497; however, the first conclusive evidence of a voyage shows that he set sail from Spain in May 1499 as the navigator of a Spanish ship. The expedition sailed to the Gulf of Mexico, then up North America&rsquo;s Atlantic coast from Florida to the Chesapeake Bay. <br />Vespucci, like many of his contemporaries, believed he was exploring the extreme eastern shores of the Asian continent. Hoping that he would soon discover a western passage to the rich markets of Asia, he returned to Europe to organize another expedition.
