Temat postu: gucci hobo bags The 'Firmament' as an Early Attemp
The earliest Sumerian cuneiforms mention Nammu [2], a formless abyss, who curled in upon herself, and created the gods. Later, the Babylonians wrote a similar story in what is known as the
Enuma elis.
In the Enuma elis, it is Tiamat that is the embodiment of the formless void, a watery sea of chaos. Tiamat gives birth to the first generation of gods, and makes war on them. She is later killed by the storm-god Marduk. Marduk cleaves Tiamat in half, and the heavens and the earth are made from the divided parts of what is essentially a large mass of water. Tiamat's ribs were made into "the vault of heaven and earth".
In a sense, the firmament was a hypothesis. Given that modern science did not begin developing until the 16th century, the Israelite conception of the universe can be called "scientifically naïve". [1, p.228]
But it did explain numerous phenomena for ancient Israelites observing nature in the Bronze Age. Looking up at the sky on a clear day one can’t help but observe that the sky is blue. Like water. From horizon to horizon, the view even appears circular and domelike. When it rains, water comes from the sky, as if the “windows of heaven” were opened to let water come in. If an ancient Israelite dug deep enough,
Upon the fourth day of creation, Yahweh affixed the stars, the Sun, and the Moon into the firmament as a means to give signs

The Explanatory Power of the Firmament for Ancient Israelites
Fans of ancient mythology will notice there are similarities with Greek mythology, as well.
The surface of the firmament, like Tiamat's ribs, is called "the vault of heaven". [1] It is referred to in the Book of Job, Chapter 37:18

, which says, "Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?" (Yahweh spread out the sky

The ancient Israelites were a subculture that originated from Mesopotamian cultures of Sumeria, Akkadia, Assyria, and Babylon. As such, much of the earlier aspects of Israelite religion were based off Sumerian religions.
The Israelites creation story is an evolved version of the story. Genesis 1:6 says that on the first day "God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters." Essentially, this is stating that prior to the creation of the Earth there was nothing but a huge blob of water. [1] Yahweh called the firmament “heaven”. [3]

The Israelite Adaptation of the Firmament
Today, historians and theologians have pieced together their writings as recorded in the Old Testament, and show that they believed in a flat, circular Earth surrounded on all sides by infinite waters.
The firmament is essentially an invisible, physical barrier that made a separation, almost like a bubble, within the waters of chaos. Except this “bubble” was half spherical, with the Earth being its bottom border. To the ancient Israelites, the Earth was more like a hill or flat land. Beneath the Earth was “the great deep”, which is mentioned in Genesis 7:11. The purpose of the firmament was to allow a space for their God, Yahweh, to create a world that can be inhabited by plants, animals, and humans.
The ancient Israelites believed that above the Earth was a solid, invisible dome which they called the ‘firmament’, and the Earth was surrounded on all sides by water.
