Colts may play [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and Jeff Saturday
Uncertainty about stars is making fans nervous for opener.
INDIANAPOLIS – Colts tight end [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] says he's fresh, if a bit uncomfortable, about starting the regular season without a single preseason game appearance.
Colts center Jeff Saturday, who also missed the preseason, said if he's close to being ready to play Sunday at Houston, he'll be on the field.
Nothing like a little uncertainty around a pair of stars to make Colts fans nervous for the opener.
If they're both on the field for the season opener against their AFC South rival, it would be a huge boost to Colts' confidence.
The good news is that[link widoczny dla zalogowanych][link widoczny dla zalogowanych][link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. “(But) this is the first time I haven't played in any preseason games. It's really weird. I'm feeling very fresh. That's a good thing, I guess.”
Saturday, entering his 12th year, missed the preseason after having surgery to get loose material removed from his knee. He was back at practice this week, but hadn't had live contact as of Wednesday.
“If, physically, my knee can hold up, I should be fine as far as playing,” Saturday said. “I've been in the game long enough to know what is required, what kind of conditioning I need. My conditioning has been good. From that standpoint, I should be fine.”
The biggest roadblock is getting confidence in the knee again, Saturday said.
“It's just about getting accustomed to feeling it,” he said. “Any time you get injured, it feels different. You want to get back to normal and get to where you can accomplish your job under stressful circumstances. You can't mimic game speed. I haven't hit yet.”
If Saturday is in the lineup,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Colts are expected to move Jamey Richard to left guard. If Saturday cannot play, Richard would likely take over the center spot. The status of left tackle Charlie Johnson remains uncertain. His backup, Tony Ugoh, has been hit by injuries, too, and was put Wednesday on the waived-injured list. If Johnson can't go, it would leave the position in the hands of rookie Jeff Linkenbach. The Colts also signed offensive lineman Joe Reitz off waivers from Miami on Wednesday.
Gonzo back for the punt return?
Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez expressed frustration Monday that he hadn't been given a clear shot to regain his starting position after missing last year with injury. Gonzalez is listed as the backup to Pierre Garcon on the current depth chart.
Colts coach Jim Caldwell said Wednesday if there was a miscommunication, he was responsible.
Nevertheless, uncertainty seems to be the word for Gonzalez, who isn't sure what to think about his other potential role as a punt returner. He's listed as the No.1 punt returner on the team's depth chart, and has worked out at the position in practice.
Asked to name the last time, he returned a punt, Gonzalez said. “Never.” He paused and said it might have been a little more recent, but not by much.
“In college, I feel like I picked one or two up off the ground,” Gonzalez said. “In high school, I can recall one for sure. There were probably a few others. In the NFL, I haven't done it.”
